You booked a session!

What’s next?

Coaching sessions tend to be goal oriented. Start by reflecting on what you would like to work on and achieve together.

The First Session

The first session we will go over the confidentiality agreement and I will provide a little bit of background about how to treat the sessions. These sessions are collaborative in nature, so we will work together to structure them in a way that suits you and your learning style best.

In the introductory session I will normally spend at least half the session getting to know you, your story and some key challenges that brought you in. Always keep in mind that if there are certain things that you do not want to share, you can always ask to move on to something else.

By the second half we might discuss some key areas that we will work on together or start to dive in. This varies from client to client and their comfort level.

My Personal Approach

My personal approach is quite direct and flexible. I will often let clients know which areas I believe would be beneficial to work on and how to work on them. I do not give direct “homework” but there are takeaways. I will often make recommendations for communication strategies and tools to try and offer a different approach or perspective.

In each session, I prioritize where you are that day or week. We are likely to start working through whatever is top of mind for you. I find the underlying theme of most concerns tends to show up pretty consistently so even if the topic varies slightly, we are often doing the same work.

Structure

If you have relationship concerns, showing up with your partner is the best way to work through them. However, individual sessions can also be helpful to give each of you a space to reflect. Whether clients want to occasionally work individually outside of their couple sessions is up to their own discretion and comfort level.

I recommend booking sessions once per week or once every two weeks. I find it is best to start once per week when there is a lot of ground to cover and reduce the frequency later on.

Coaching

Coaching is not a forever thing. I operate as a coach and not as a licensed therapist. If I believe that the help of a therapist might be more suitable for you in conjunction with your coaching sessions, I will let you know. A lot of people I work with tend to do both.

My goal in coaching is to prepare you with the tools and perspective that will allow you to confidently manage challenges on your own.
